2000 Progress Report: Evaluating a New Class of Imprinted Sorbent Materials for Toxic Metals Removal

EPA Grant Number: R828163
Title: Evaluating a New Class of Imprinted Sorbent Materials for Toxic Metals Removal
Investigators: SenGupta, Arup K. , Miller, Alfred
Institution: Lehigh University
EPA Project Officer: Krishnan, Bala S.
Project Period: July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2002
Project Period Covered by this Report: July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001
Project Amount: $193,000
RFA: Exploratory Research - Environmental Engineering (1999)
Research Category: Engineering and Environmental Chemistry

Description:

Objective:

The objective of the study is to develop a new class of hybrid sorbent materials for selective separation of dissolved heavy metals and metalloids.

Progress Summary:

The tasks we completed during the last year include: (1) preparation of the Hybrid Ion Exchanger (HIX) materials by dispersing colloid-like hydrated iron oxide particles within macroporous cation-exchange resins; and (2) performance of laboratory tests confirming regenerability of As(V) oxyanions from HIX with sodium hydroxide.

A. The preparation methodology of HIX consisted of the following steps.

Step 1. Loading with FeCl3 Solution at pH ,2.0

Step 2. Desporption and simultaeously hydroxide in the gel phase

B. Photograph of the HIX particles.

C. Desorbability of As(V) from loaded HIX material.

For the HIX material to be reused for tens of cycles, the efficiency of desorption needs to be high.

Future Activities:

We will carry out laboratory experiments to seek answers to the following questions:
