Re: NEPA

About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the FHWA Office of Project Development and Environmental Review is to advance environmental stewardship and streamlining for FHWA-funded projects through the application of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) principles and the NEPA Process. FHWA's NEPA project development process serves as a balanced and streamlined approach to transportation decision making that takes into account the potential impacts on both human and natural resources and the public's need for safe and efficient transportation improvements.

Resources We Provide

The Office of Project Development and Environmental Review provides guidance, technical assistance, tools, and technologies to help states effectively implement the environmental review phase of transportation project development, while encouraging the use of environmental streamlining and stewardship practices to reach this end. Environmental stewardship and streamlining requires transportation and natural, cultural, and historic resource agencies to establish realistic timeframes for transportation project development and then to work cooperatively to adhere to those timeframes, while protecting and enhancing the environment.
