Focus AreaDescription
511 Travel InformationSimply stated, 511 is an easy-to-remember 3-digit telephone number, available nationwide, that provides current information about travel conditions, allowing travelers to make better choices - choice of time, choice of mode of transportation, choice of route.
Amber AlertAMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) Alerts are emergency messages broadcast when a law enforcement agency determines that a child has been abducted and is in imminent danger.
Commercial Vehicle Information Systems And Networks (CVISN)The term commercial vehicle information systems and networks (CVISN, pronounced see’ vision) refers to the ITS information system elements that support Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO). CVISN includes information systems owned and operated by governments, carriers, and other stakeholders. It excludes the sensor and control elements of ITS/CVO.
Intelligent Grade CrossingsIntelligent Grade Crossings are those locations where ITS for roadways come together with Intelligent Railroad Systems, and in particular, Positive Train Control (PTC) systems. PTC systems, unlike traditional railroad signal systems, provide continuous information on train location and speed.
Intelligent Railroad SystemsThe new Intelligent Railroad Systems are key to making railroad operations-freight, intercity passenger, and commuter-safer and more secure, reducing delays, reducing costs, raising effective capacity, improving customer satisfaction, improving energy utilization, reducing emissions, and becoming more economically viable.
Intelligent Vehicle InitiativeThe Intelligent Vehicle Initiative’s (IVI) focus is to prevent crashes by helping drivers avoid hazardous mistakes. The objectives of USDOT's IVI activities are: preventing accelerated distraction, and facilitating accelerated development and deployment of crash avoidance systems.
Intermodal Freight TechnologyThe Intermodal Freight Technology program conducts operational tests of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies, supports the development of tools to evaluate infrastructure and operational needs at border crossings, and works with our partners to develop standards for exchanging electronic freight data.
Public SafetyThe ITS Public Safety Program is working to improve emergency services through: faster incident detection and notification; faster emergency response times; and real-time wireless communications links among emergency response organizations.
Real Time Traveler InformationReal Time Traveler Information is information about the transportation system that a traveler can use as they navigate the system or plan a trip. This information could include: location of traffic incidents; adverse road conditions; current construction conditions; weather-related road conditions; and, public transit information.
Rural ITS DeploymentThe primary objective of the Rural Transportation Deployment is to guarantee that rural areas and small communities gain the economic, social, environmental, and community benefits that the USDOT programs provide.
Transit SystemsThrough research, field operational tests, evaluations, and technology transfer and outreach, the mission of the ITS Transit Program is to Enhance the ability of the nation’s public transportation systems to provide customer focused, seamless, responsive, and efficient end-to-end mobility for all by leading the innovative development and application of ITS technologies through research, operational tests/deployments, evaluation, training, and outreach in coordination and cooperation with the transit industry.
Work ZonesForward-looking transportation agencies across the country are using ITS in their major work zones to make travel through and around the work zones safer and more efficient. ITS involves the use of electronics, computers, and communications equipment to collect information, process it, and take appropriate actions.
