10th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Open printable version in a new window

America was challenged a decade ago -- ten brief and exciting years-- to address access needs of people with disabilities. These people are our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparents, friends and associates with whom we share a common bond -- Americans -- like you and me. America proclaimed  the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) to be a new "Declaration of Independence" for people with physical and/or mental disabilities.

As the founders of our nation and the many people who faced and overcame barriers to freedom, equality, and equity, the American people have spoken and are working to assure that discriminatory practices and physical barriers, for people with disabilities, are eliminated throughout our nation. The transportation industry is one of the leaders in this area.

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the ADA, the U.S. Department of Transportation is providing this brief review of transportation issues, policies, and images with a theme: "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow". We hope this will help you reflect on the the nation's past practices and policies and stimulate ideas to strengthen America's resolve to include all of our people in the further development and progress of our nation.
