Record U.S. Air Travel to Mexico 1999

Tourism Industries has just released the 1999 In-Flight Survey Report on U.S. Air Travelers to Mexico. This report provides research data on the record 4.8 million U.S. residents which flew to Mexico in 1999, an 8 percent increase from 1998.

Some of the highlights from the report on air travelers to Mexico include:

There were 4.8 million air travelers to Mexico in 1999, making it the most popular international air destination for U.S. residents. The top states of origin were: California, Texas, Illinois, Florida, and New York State. The top destinations in Mexico were: Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco. Volume estimates to and from these states and destinations and others can be obtained by purchasing this report.

Of the U.S. air travelers to Mexico, 16% used a package, an increase of 3 percentage points from the previous year. The top two items included in the package were air and lodging. Only 7% of the U.S. air travelers to Mexico were on their first international trip outside the United States.

Half of all U.S. travelers to Mexico listed leisure/recreation/holiday as their main purpose of trip, up 6 percent from last year. Business travel followed with almost a quarter (24%) of travelers who cited this as their main purpose of trip, an increase of 3 percent from 1998. One-fifth (20%) of all U.S. travelers went to Mexico for the main purpose of visiting friends and relatives, a decline of 10 percent from the previous year.

U.S. residents averaged 9 nights outside the U.S., with two-thirds spending between one to seven nights. The majority (83%) visited only one city however as many as 15% visited two cities. The top activities of U.S. residents to Mexico in 1999 were Dining in restaurants, shopping, water sports/sunbathing, visiting historical sites, and visiting small towns. U.S. residents had an average trip expenditure of $673 per visitor per trip. This is almost half of the average amount that U.S. residents spent on an overseas trip in 1999.

There are three sets of cross tab tables in the report and 32 tables that provide traveler characteristics, destinations, origins (the U.S. states and cities of residence) and spending data on the air travelers to Mexico. Tourism Industries (TI) surveyed almost 2,700 U.S. residents who visited Mexico in 1999. The surveys were collected on U.S. and foreign flag carriers who voluntarily participated in TI's In-Flight Survey research program.
