Description:
Objective:The objective of this research project is to study new methods to effectively incorporate the public, and their views, into meaningful participation in the environmental policy process. To accomplish this objective, the social forces that influence community perceptions will be researched, as well as the techniques of policy development and implementation. My initial work, therefore, will take place in the classroom, followed by hypothesis development. Validation and ultimate refinement will be accomplished using current data from an ongoing environmental project at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The MMR site was chosen for this study because it is a sizable project, the public has been actively involved in the policy process for several years, and there exists substantial documentation of past public participation efforts.
