September 2004 International Arrivals to the U.S. – Solid Growth for the Month and Year-to-Date

The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that 3.2 million international visitors traveled to the United States in September 2004, an increase of almost seven percent over September 2003. Arrivals for the first nine months of 2004 totaled 29.1 million, an increase of nearly 13 percent from the same period last year. The U.S. has experienced growth in visitation for 12 consecutive months.

In addition, the following information describes top port activity for the first nine months.

TOP PORTS January – September 2004

Arrivals to the USA by port-of-entry is tracked on a monthly basis. OTTI has data on arrivals via over 40 ports of entry, by all world regions and 30 countries. A brief analysis is presented on the top 15 ports for overseas arrivals September 2004 year-to-date.

Overseas arrivals through ports were up 16 percent for the first nine months of 2004. Arrivals through the top 15 ports of entry equaled 85 percent of all overseas arrivals through nine months of 2004, no change from the same period last year. The top three ports of entry (New York – JFK, Miami and Los Angeles) accounted for 37 percent of all overseas arrivals through ports this year as it did for the first nine months of 2003.

All top fifteen ports posted increases in arrivals. Agana (Guam), Newark, Sanford and New York registered the largest increases, at 47 percent, 26 percent, 25 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

New York remains the leading port of entry for the first nine months. Newark jumped from seventh to fifth, ahead of San Francisco and Chicago. Atlanta moved up to ninth from tenth, ahead of Washington, DC. Sanford moved up from thirteenth to twelfth, ahead of Boston. Detroit and Houston remained in fourteenth and fifteenth spots, respectively.
