President Proclamation on National Tourism Week 2002!
The Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI) is proud to announce
that President George W. Bush has officially proclaimed May 5-11, 2002
as National Tourism Week! In recognition of all the hard work that the
American travel and tourism industry has made, this Proclamation acknowledges
the importance of travel and tourism to the prosperity and well being
of this country. The Proclamation, declared on May 6, 2002, marks the
first time since 1994 that a President has publicly recognized National
Tourism Week in the U.S. To view the Proclamation, visit the White House

OTTI would like to encourage the Industry to use this Proclamation to
highlight the importance of travel and tourism for this country.

OTTI has engaged in several activities in celebration and recognition
of National Tourism Week. In addition to working to obtain the Presidential
Proclamation, OTTI has also helped plan official events and projects:
1. Assistant Secretary for Trade Development, Linda M. Conlin will speak
at National Tourism Week events in New York City, Washington D.C., Miami
and Orlando.
2. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Service Industries, Tourism & Finance,
Douglas B. Baker will speak at National Tourism Week events in Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
3. The Department of Commerce Building in Washington D.C., has displayed
an outside banner stating the "U.S. Department of Commerce Celebrates
National Tourism Week" above the building's main entrance throughout
the week.
4. OTTI has set up a table in the main Commerce Building lobby with fact
sheets on the travel and tourism industry's impact on this country, as
well as providing two informational brochures on some of the products
and services offered by the International Trade Administration. The Travel
Industry Association of America's presentation on "Tourism Works
for America" is also being continuously broadcast via high-definition
television.
5. The Department of Commerce has printed National Tourism Week bookmarks
that include a message from the Secretary of Commerce, Donald L. Evans.
The bookmarks are available at the OTTI information table as well as at
the White House Visitor Center and Export Assistance Centers around the
country.
