Carl T. Johnson

As the PHMSA Administrator, Carl T. Johnson's responsibilities include:

Advising the Secretary of the Department of Transportation on all matters pertaining to PHMSA
Directing PHMSA's national program to protect against the risks to life and property inherent in the transportation of hazardous materials in commerce and of liquid, natural gas, petroleum, and other hazardous energy products by pipeline
Establishing and leading PHMSA's policies, objectives, and priorities and directing the development of action plans to accomplish PHMSA missions
Approving and directing the development of PHMSA's broad legislative, budgetary, fiscal consumer, public affairs, and civil rights programs and plans
Overseeing a budget of $148 million to support PHMSA's ability to reduce hazardous materials and pipeline related incidents, deaths, injuries, and property damages.

Mr. Johnson was nominated for the post by President Bush on October 30^th 2007 and received U.S. Senate confirmation on December 19^th, 2007.

Johnson comes to the department having served as a president of the Compressed Gas Association. Prior to this he served as special assistant to Representative Amory Houghton of New York. Earlier in his career, he served as director of federal government relations at Corning Glass Works.

Johnson received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's degree from The George Washington University. He and his wife, Joyce, reside in Virginia. They have two grown children.
