How We All Benefit from Insurance

The Missouri Insurance Education Foundation (MIEF) promotes insurance education to improve the understanding and perception of insurance.

This is a contemporary learning tool that makes learning about the insurance industry fun.

Enter the Jourdon Insurtainment Complex and learn about the many benefits provided by the insurance industry.

Subject:    Understanding how everyone, even high school and college students, benefits from life, health and property- casualty insurance.

Objective:    This lesson is used to introduce students to insurance. At completion, students will better understand the important role insurance plays in their lives.

Materials:    The CD-ROM entitled How We All Benefit from Insurance

Students navigate into a futuristic movie theater. The theater has a series of pre-show "advertisements" and four movie parodies that explain the basic concepts and benefits of insurance.

• Insurmageddon - illustrates how insurance helps people stay financially stable.
• Awesome Powers of Insurance - shows how insurance contributes to the economy as an employer, taxpayer, and investor.
• Leaving Lost Credit - tells how insurance helps people obtain credit.
• Back to Life - explains how insurance protects against the financial consequences of death.

In addition an arcade allows the student to play games illustrating other basic insurance concepts. On the Insurance Jobs Board, the student can learn about the different jobs available in the insurance industry. Finally, students can earn the right to take an Extreme Ride on the virtual roller coaster by answering questions on all the materials studied. The CD also has an Adobe file with detailed information on insurance subjects.

Delivery Method:    Self-study is recommended. Alternatively, each of the four movies could be projected in class setting for discussion afterwards. Arcade games can also be used in a group setting.

Time Required:    Time to go through the entire CD-ROM varies by interest and ability level of the students and speed of the computer. A complete review of all the movies, arcade games, job board and final quiz would normally take between 1.5 and 3.0 hours. Each of the movies, including pre-show materials and quizzes, takes about 5 minutes. Arcade games can take between 10 and 20 minutes each. Final quiz prior to taking Extreme Ride roller coaster takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Discussion:    Have the class discuss their reaction to the importance of insurance in our everyday lives. How does insurance help employers, employees, governments, suppliers, etc.? How does insurance support the economy? What role does insurance play in helping obtain your first automobile? How can insurance help protect against the financial consequences of death?
