MERIC is located at the University of New Orleans in the College of Engineering. It was established by the Gulf Coast Region Maritime Technology Center (GCRMTC) to provide technology transfer and technical assistance to the shipbuilding industry. This site was developed to assist the shipbuilding industry in planning and implementing environmental and health related methodologies by providing a readily available source of technical and regulatory information for distribution. -Develop a national depository of environmental data regarding shipbuilding and related activities. -Establish a network linking industry with research and proven technologies -Provide outreach training and educational programs for the maritime industry

The EPA has developed special requirements that may apply to you if you own or operate a shipbuilding or ship repair facility that has surface coating operations. Because shipyards and ship repair facilities use a variety of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP) as solvents and carriers in marine coatings, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized a National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants on December 15, 1995.
