North Atlantic Gateway Office (New York)

The North Atlantic Gateway Office region encompasses one of the largest concentrations of maritime and intermodal activity in the nation.  Last year, more than $166 billion of general cargo was processed through the Port of New York and New Jersey.  In 2007, 5,400 vessels and approximately 5.3 million TEUs transited the port, the largest container port on the East Coast.  The Gateway Office’s area of responsibility includes the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, as well as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  In addition, the Gateway Office has the responsibility for reporting on the commercial activity in four provinces in Eastern Canada, which includes Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Port of Halifax.  The Gateway Office also monitors the commercial and military activities of two strategic ports, the Port of New York and New Jersey and the Port of Philadelphia, as well as ten other ports within the Gateway Office’s area of responsibility.

The North Atlantic Gateway Office is a crucial liaison for the Agency to develop, analyze, and progress regional projects such as the Maritime Administration's Marine Highway Initiative, intended to reduce congestion on our crowded highways through the increased use of barge and intermodal services.  This Gateway Office specializes in infrastructure investment and finance and assists in the development of U.S. transportation policy by bringing together various transportation stakeholders to collaboratively address port infrastructure problems and issues while considering the impacts on the transportation system outside of port areas.  These stakeholders include other Federal Agencies, State and local governments, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Port Authorities, and senior freight industry representatives.
