Trade and Tariffs

The lumber and wood sector is defined in chapter 44 of the Harmonized Tariff System. Lumber and wood accounted for less than 1 percent of total U.S. non-textile industrial exports to Morocco . Top U.S. exports in this sector are veneer sheets and lumber from oak, beach and other non-coniferous woods.

Moroccan tariffs on lumber and wood products range from 10 to 50 percent, averaging 35.2 percent. Wooden windows particle board, plywood and manufactured wood products (tableware, statuettes, etc.)

Moroccan exports to the United States are minimal, less than 1 percent of total Moroccan non-textile industrial exports.

The United States applies tariffs of 0 to 10.7 percent to these products, with an average of 2 percent.

Tariff Elimination

Tariffs will be phased out according to three tariff elimination categories: immediate elimination, equal cuts over five years, and equal cuts over nine years.

Overall, less than 1 percent of U.S. lumber and wood exports will receive duty-free treatment immediately upon implementation of the agreement. By the fifth year, a little less than 2 percent of duties on U.S. lumber wood exports will be liberalized. The majority of U.S. lumber and wood exports to Morocco will be phased-out over a course of 9 years.

The United States agreed to eliminate duties on Moroccan lumber and wood exports immediately.
