This sector is defined by the Non-ferrous Metals Uruguay Round sector initiative. Non-ferrous metals accounted for 0.24 percent of total U.S. industrial exports to Australia in 2003, totaling $29 million. The top U.S. exports in this sector are copper alloys, aluminum, and nickel waste. Australia’s tariffs range between zero and five percent with an average of 2.2 percent in 2003.

Australian exports to the United States totaled $196 million in 2003, or 3.3 percent of total exports to the United States. Australia’s top exports to the United States are copper alloys, aluminum, and nickel. The United States’ tariffs range between zero and eight percent with an average of 2.6 percent in 2003.

Tariff Elimination

The United States will eliminate all tariffs immediately on non-ferrous metals except HS 81110045 - - unwrought manganese, which will be eliminated by January 1, 2010. The tariff on this product will be removed in equal annual stages from the date the Agreement enters into force until 2010 when the product will duty free. Australia will eliminate all tariffs immediately upon implementation of this agreement.

Copper and Copper Alloy Brass Mill Products. Both Australia and the United States will eliminate all tariffs on copper and copper alloy products immediately upon implementation of the agreement.
