Ferrous Ores and Metals

Trade and Tariffs

This sector is defined by the Steel Uruguay Round sector agreement. Steel products accounted for 0.21 percent of total U.S. exports to Australia in 2003, totaling $26 million. The top U.S. exports in this sector are steel pipes, fittings and wires. Australia’s tariffs range between zero and 5 percent with an average of 4.4 percent in 2003.

Australian exports to the United States totaled $162 million in 2003, or 2.7 percent of the total exports to the United States. Australia’s top exports to the United States semi-finished steel products, hot-rolled sheets of steel and railway tracks. The U.S. tariffs range between zero and 6.2 percent with an average of 0.61 percent.

Tariff Elimination

Both Australia and the United States will eliminate all tariffs on ferrous ores and metals immediately upon implementation of the agreement.
