About Census Taker

12.  Why should I use Census Taker?

Advantages to using Census Taker are:

  • Improved quality through automatic data checks. It will mean fewer mistakes and fewer follow-up phone calls.
  • It will take you less time; you will only have to see the parts of the questionnaire that apply to your establishment.
  • Data are saved to the U.S. Census Bureau servers as you complete the questionnaire – you can exit and resume at a later time without losing your data.
  • You will have options for a printed or electronic report of your completed questionnaire.
  • The help you need is available with a click of the mouse.

13.  Where is my username and password for Census Taker?

The username and password are located to the right of your mailing label on the letter notifying your company that it has been selected in the survey. If you have more than one establishment selected in the survey, your username and password are the same for each reporting unit.

14.  How can I coordinate my reporting units in Census Taker?

If you are a coordinator of multiple MECS Forms within your organization, you can still file with Census Taker and track the status of your multiple forms.

  • You can communicate the provided user name and password to personnel reporting the data.
  • The reporting personnel can use Census Taker to report the data. However they should not select the “finished” button in Census Taker.
  • The data will be saved in Census Taker each time the “save & exit/logout” button is pushed. This feature allows you to enter and exit without losing any data that you have already reported.
  • Once the reporting personnel have entered data for their section they should communicate this to the coordinator.
  • The coordinator can then verify in Census Taker that all sections are complete. Once the multiple forms have been completed, the coordinator should then select the “finished” button in Census Taker.
  • Once the “finished” button has been selected in Census Taker your reported data is sent to the Census Bureau.

This process allows the coordinator to retain control over those establishments that have completed and submitted a form and those that have not, and it makes the coordination process easier, and requires less paperwork.
