Transportation Equipment

Trade and Tariffs

The transportation sector covers tanker trailers, trains, carriages, and maritime vessels. In 2003 Oman imported a little over $300,000 worth of transportation equipment from the United States. This accounted for less than one-tenth of a percent of Oman’s total non-textile industrial imports from the United States.

Oman either allows shipping and transportation products to enter duty-free or applies a 5 percent tariff. The average Oman tariff for this sector is 3.8 percent.

The United States imported no shipping and transportation products from Oman in 2003.

U.S. tariffs applied to the transportation sector range from 0 to 14 percent, with an average of 2.85 percent.

Tariff Elimination

The U.S.-Oman FTA will eliminate all industrial tariffs in the United States and Oman within 10 years of implementation. Tariffs will be phased out according to three tariff elimination categories: 1) immediate elimination, 2) equal cuts over 5 years, and 3) equal cuts over 10 years.

Oman currently provides duty-free access to 23 percent of transportation equipment, while the United States provides duty-free access to 54 percent. Immediately upon implementation both countries will grant each other duty-free entry for 100 percent of transportation and shipping products.
