Technical Abstract: This review summarizes the advantages of LTSEM for observations of samples of snow and ice by illustrating the type of surface information that is obtainable, the resolution that can be attained and how the depth of field allows one to observe crystals with significant topography. In addition, we illustrate samples collected from remote locations, samples from time sequences during a storm and finally show examples of snow and ice biota as well as, artificial and Martian snow.
