Census TIGER/Line Files
TIGER® comes from the acronym Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing which is the name for the system and digital database developed at the U.S. Census Bureau to support its mapping needs for the Decennial Census and other Bureau programs. TIGER/Line files are a digital database of geographic features, such as roads, railroads, rivers, lakes, legal boundaries, census statistical boundaries, etc. covering the entire United States. The data base contains information about these features such as their location in latitude and longitude, the name, the type of feature, address ranges for most streets, the geographic relationship to other features, and other related information. They are the public product created from the Census Bureau's TIGER database. NOTE: These files are not graphic images of maps, but rather digital data describing geographic features. To make use of these data, a user must have mapping or Geographic Information System (GIS) software that can import TIGER/Line data.
The latest edition of TIGER/Line Files are not available on DVD, but are available for downloading.

Subject Content: 108th CD Census 2000 TIGER/Line Files contain the 108th Congressional Districts and are the latest version of the Census 2000 TIGER/Line Files. This file uses the same format as the other Census 2000 TIGER/Line Files. It does not reflect the major reformatting of the TIGER/Line Files that appear in the post-Census 2000 (2002) TIGER/Line File versions. However, there are some field name and content changes from earlier versions of the Census 2000 TIGER/Line Files.

The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line ® files is the official version of the TIGER/Line ® files delivered to the official recipients under Public Law 94-171 and to redistricting officials in the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Geography: The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line ® files cover all counties, parishes, boroughs, census geographic areas and equivalent entities for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico based on January 1, 2000 governmental unit boundaries. This version of the TIGER/Line ® files contains the Census 2000 geographic entities required for redistricting and other uses, and includes the Census 2000 tabulation block numbers, and the final Census 2000 definitions of the census tracts, census designated places (CDPs), voting districts, state legislative districts, school districts, and so forth. The only Census 2000 geographic entity this version does not contain is the ZIP Code ® Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) , and the address ranges appearing in the Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line ® files are of approximately the same vintage as those appearing in the 1999 TIGER/Line ® files.
The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line ® files will not include files for American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Minor Outlying Areas (Midway), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Subject content: Digital map data for 1990 census geographic areas, basic map features (streets, rivers, railroads, etc.) and their names, address ranges, and ZIP Codes (in 345 core metropolitan areas), in the form of 14 record types. Address-range information covers an estimated 85 million individual addresses compared with 55 million in the 1990 version of these files.
Geography: Boundaries of legal entities as reported to the Census Bureau to be in effect on January 1, 1992, as well as the final 1990 census tabulation area codes for those entities and certain statistical areas, such as blocks, census tracts, and block numbering areas (BNA's). Also, boundaries for Congressional Districts of the 103rd Congress; 1990 urbanized area codes for each block in an urbanized area and an urban indicator for each block; and boundaries and codes for Elementary, Middle, Secondary, and Unified School Districts.
File format & software: Files are ASCII. Comes with LandView desktop mapping software (block-group polygons only and no thematic mapping), an adaptation of the computer mapping application Marplot) is designed to show the contents of TIGER/Line files and to show corresponding census population and housing data.
