NOAA Releases A 15-Year Plan for Ship Replacement

Cover page of recapitalization planNOAA has published and released its plan to modernize their aging fleet of ships. The NOAA Ship Recapitalization Plan calls for the replacement of nine ships and an intensive, service-life extension of a tenth vessel.

The fleet supports a wide range of marine activities, including fisheries and coastal research, nautical charting, and long-range ocean and climate studies. NOAA's ships are specially equipped and designed to support the agency's programs, and have unique capabilities not found in the commercial fleet.

NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations completed an assessment of the 19 ships in the fleet and determined that 10 of those vessels will reach the end of their useful service life within the next 15 years. The plan is a comprehensive program to systematically replace or upgrade the fleet in order to meet the current and future demands of the science community.
