The program addresses Smithsonian's facility repair and renovation challenges, as well as provides a means for limited new construction.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • Independent evaluations document program effectiveness. In the past 10 years, four reviews have examined both the scope of the program and its management, effectiveness, and results. These independent evaluations confirmed that program management was proper, funding was spent effectively, customer needs were met, and overall the program was achieving intended results.
  • The program has implemented a number of industry best practices, standardized cost estimating, and established strong priority and decision-making processes to use available resources most effectively. The program's limited resources are allocated to the highest priority needs that will achieve the maximum benefit in improving the overall condition of Smithsonian facilities.
  • The program has established measures that focus on the program's priority of revitalizing the rapidly deteriorating infrastructure. This data shows the program is making progress in achieving its long-term performance goals. In addition, a recent audit by the Government Accountability Office shows that the Smithsonian Institution has strong success in meeting budget and schedule targets.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Improving the Facilities Condition Index (rates the condition of facilities) and the process for assessing the conditions of the Smithsonian buildings.
  • Improving cost estimates for facility projects by systematically documenting the requirements, scope of work, and desired schedule.
