Census Bureau: Economic Census

The purpose of the program is to collect detailed economic information about the U.S. economy, including the number of business establishments and employees, payroll, and measures of output. The survey is conducted twice a decade, occurring in the years ending with 2 and 7, and covers 84 percent of the U.S. economy.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program performs well and is the only source of comprehensive, detailed information about the US economy. To reduce reporting burdens on small businesses, administrative records are used to obtain information from most small establishments. The program regularly consults with other Federal agencies and the business community to ensure it meets the needs of policy makers and data users.
  • The program has shown consistent progress in achieving its performance goals and has instituted several improvements, including accelerating release schedules and expanding coverage. The 2002 economic census offered electronic reporting, but response rates were low. External and internal evaluations are conducted on an as-needed basis to support and evaluate program effectiveness.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Continue implementing a plan to improve electronic response rates in the 2007 Economic Census.
  • mplement Economic Census response improvement plan.
