Support for Individual Researchers

These NSF programs fund individual researchers, educators, and students to expand knowledge in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Investments support innovative programs that prepare tomorrow's leaders and enable the creation of a diverse science and engineering workforce to meet the nation's needs.

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program shows a strong commitment to broadening participation to academic institutions beyond the top 100 of NSF funding recipients through outreach, grants workshops, and presentations by NSF staff at professional meetings.
  • Independent reviews have shown this program to be effective and on traick in providing support for researchers, educators, and students.
  • The program has improved its performance toward its annual goal of increasing the number of applicants to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program from groups that are underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • NSF will develop new ways and measures to monitor its efforts to broaden participation in this and other programs.
  • NSF will continue to increase its efforts to increase numbers of applicants for Graduate Research Fellowships from groups that are underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce.
  • NSF will continue to develop innovative approaches for broadening participation in CAREER, GRF, IGERT, and GK-12 using guidance from the recently issued NSF-wide Report on Broadening Participation.
