Census Bureau: Current Demographic Statistics

The purpose of the program is to administer household surveys that provide information on the number, geographic distribution, and social and economic characteristics of the U.S. population. The two primary surveys are the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program is effective in administering the Bureau's main population surveys. Data addresses the need to accurately report the nation's demographic characteristics, including Federal program participation and impact on low income individuals.
  • The data make a unique contribution to providing official baseline estimates of various social, demographic, and economic phenomena and trends.
  • Inefficiencies were identified with respect to SIPP data release and lose of survey respondents.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Improve the current SIPP program to address current problems, in order to better meet the policy needs of the country.
  • Continue early releases of SIPP 2004 Panel core and topical module products. Begin release of the 2008 Panel data products.
