U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $600,000 to provide assistance to trade-affected workers in Connecticut

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $637,400 grant to assist approximately 150 trade-affected workers laid off by Quebecor World Northeast Graphics Inc. in North Haven, Conn.

"Today's grant will provide training and employment services to former Quebecor World Northeast Graphics workers and help them get back to work as soon as possible," said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Employment and Training Brent R. Orrell.

On May 1, the printing company announced the layoffs at the North Haven plant, which became effective on June 30, 3008.

This grant, awarded to the Connecticut Department of Labor, will provide workers who have been certified eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) with access to services that are not available through the TAA program, such as skills assessment, case management, job search assistance, job placement and follow-up. In addition, these workers will have access to the full array of dislocated worker services. The Workforce Alliance, headquartered in New Haven, Conn., will run the project.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
