U.S. Department of Labor announces $3.8 million grant to assist workers affected by automotive layoffs in southern Wisconsin

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $3,811,892 grant to assist approximately 785 workers affected by automotive industry layoffs in Rock County, Wisconsin.

"This $3.8 million grant will provide Wisconsin workers affected by the layoffs with skills training, job search assistance and other employment services to help them find new jobs," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

This grant, awarded to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with access to a wide array of dislocated worker services. Of the 785 workers targeted for services, 340 also have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Under the grant, dislocated workers who are eligible for TAA will have access to additional services not covered under the TAA program. These services include skills assessment, counseling, case management, job search assistance, job placement and follow-up.

The affected companies in Wisconsin include General Motors, Lear Corp. and Logistics Services Inc .in Janesville and United Industries in Beloit. The companies began layoffs on Feb. 22, which continued through Aug. 25, 2008.

Of the $3.8 million announced today, $1.6 million will be released initially. Additional funds will be allocated as the state demonstrates continued need.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
