Death of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh

Secretary Colin L. Powell
Washington, DC
September 11, 2003

It is with great sadness that I heard the tragic news of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh's passing. Her murder is a terrible blow to all who knew her.

Anna will be remembered for her outstanding contributions to international diplomacy and transatlantic relations. She had a special energy, integrity and compassion and she spent a great deal of her time focusing her efforts on global humanitarian issues. Anna was a cherished colleague and friend, and I will miss her.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Anna's husband and her two sons, and we express our sincerest condolences to the people of Sweden at this very sad time.
