Midwest Pilots Take Picketing Efforts in New Direction

On Friday, October 31, a contingent of Midwest Airlines pilots staged a peaceful demonstration in Southeast Milwaukee at the exclusive lakefront estate of Midwest Airlines CEO Timothy Hoeksema. The event was conducted at the entrance to the private driveway Hoeksema shares with several neighbors.

UPS website to lure DHL customers contradicts UPS testimony at congressional hearings
October 23 - ASTAR pilots, represented by ALPA, today called on Congress to further investigate the DHL-UPS merger in light of the latest attempt by UPS to openly raid DHL’s customer base through its corporate website: http://switchnow.ups.com. The site explains how DHL customers can ensure that their packages will get to their destinations by switching now to UPS, a pitch that is especially effective in light of the fact that DHL will now depend on UPS for transportation and processing of all of its products.


Perseverance Pays Off for American Eagle Pilots in Newly Ratified Agreement with Management
October 22 - American Eagle pilots, represented by ALPA, today achieved a ratified collective bargaining agreement with management after an arduous negotiations process surrounding an unprecedented 16-year contract with AMR Corporation.


United Pilots: Fuel Hedge Losses Further Proof of Misdirection of Airline
October 21 - United Airlines’ announced $779 million loss for the third quarter, $519 million attributable to poor fuel hedges, is yet another example of incompetence and lack of fiscal responsibility by its CEO and his executives, according to the pilots of United Airlines.


Spirit Pilots Protest Contract Violations, Furloughs
October 10 - Spirit pilots walked the picket line yesterday at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), demanding that Spirit Airlines management honor its commitments. Joined by fellow union members from Mesaba, Midwest, Comair, and Delta, the Spirit pilots conducted their second informational picket in as many months. The two-hour event garnered plenty of media attention, including coverage from the Detroit Free Press, NPR, and a local network affiliate.


Sun Country Pilots React to Company Bankruptcy Filing
October 6 - Capt. Buddy Scroggins, chairman of the Sun Country Airlines group of ALPA, issued the attached statement in response to the airline’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, October 6.


Continental, United Pilots Sign Protocol Agreement
October 7 - Pilots from Continental and United Airlines, both represented by ALPA, today announced additional measures to protect pilot careers and reap gains from their airlines’ alliance. Continental announced this summer that it plans to join United in the Star Alliance, the world’s largest group of airline partners. Continental currently is a member of the SkyTeam alliance.

ALPA Safety and Security Forum Opens
The 54th annual ALPA Air Safety and Security Forum opened with a bang, as attendees watched a video highlighting this year’s theme, “Leadership at Work.”

Capt. John Prater, ALPA’s president, welcomed ALPA members and guests to this year’s event, which was held Wednesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 14 in Washington, D.C.


Key Member of Congress Asks for ALPA Input on Cargo Security
August 1 - Congressman John L. Mica (R-Fla.), the ranking Republican on the House Subcommittee on Aviation, recently wrote to ALPA president, Capt. John Prater asking for recommendations from ALPA on improving cargo security. Prater testified July 24 before the Subcommittee during the “Aviation Security: An Update” hearing.

ALPA Safety, through its Volcanic Ash project under the Air Traffic Services Group, has devoted years to expanding its database of operationally relevant information on this potential hazard and improving the warning system necessary to reduce unplanned encounters of hazardous ash clouds. August 21 - ALPA invested in the future of Canadian aviators with a $5,000 contribution to the Webster Memorial Trophy Competition. The union allocated the monies to level the playing field for the amateur pilot competitors, who have to cover the costs of rental aircraft and basic living expenses to compete for the “Top Amateur Pilot in Canada” title.

Lost Retirement Savings Act
January 18, 2008 - Two key ALPA-supported bills were introduced late last year that would allow pilots to recover some of their lost retirement benefits by offering a retirement savings option to those whose defined benefit plans were terminated or frozen in bankruptcy proceedings after September 11, 2001 and before January 1, 2007. ALPA members are urged to participate in a new grassroots Call to Action to enlist congressional support for these two bills and prompt speedy action on them. Pension Reform Legislation
January 9, 2008 - Although the pilot retirement age changed on December 13, 2007, when President Bush signed into law H.R. 4343, (P.L. 110-135), there remains a critical need for Congress to pass H.R. 2103 and S. 1270. Although the pilot retirement age has been raised to 65, there are still pilots who will be penalized on the guaranteed level of benefits they receive from the PBGC because age 60 was the mandatory retirement age at the time their defined benefit plans were terminated. We have updated the suggested message for ALPA members to send to your federal legislators to reflect this situation, and continue to urge your participation in this important grassroots effort.
