Materials Research
Advanced materials, including metals, polymers, composites, and intermetallic compounds, play an important role in
improving the efficiency of transportation engines and vehicles. Advanced materials are continually
being developed and integrated into transportation applications to increase the
overall performance and efficiency of the system. Material research focuses on
the development, modeling, and characterization of novel, engineering materials
intended for use in all transportation domain applications (maritime, air,
surface, pipelines, etc.) including:
- Developing
screening and testing procedures to help ensure high quality materials are used
in highway construction.
- Working
to identify and fix existing problems as they relate to poorly performing
materials.
- Characterizing
the performance of construction materials and acceptance testing of new
materials.
