Mid-Atlantic Gateway Office (Norfolk)

The Mid-Atlantic Gateway Office is the field office for the Maritime Administration that serves Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Accessible to over 60% of the US market, the seaports located in the Mid-Atlantic Gateway region provide services that reach beyond their geographic boundaries.  A container-on-barge service links the Ports of Richmond and Norfolk. This service is part of the Maritime Administration’s Marine Highway Initiative that is designed to alleviate truck traffic congestion on regional highways.  A seaport since 1729, Baltimore is the closest major seaport to the significant markets of the Midwest United States and is a leader in providing maritime services to the auto industry.  Norfolk’s identity as a strategic military and transportation center dates back to the early 1600’s and continues today, while the Port of Hampton Roads, VA boasts the deepest channel on the East Coast at 50 feet.  North Carolina is growing as a home for distribution centers and is designing a new 600-acre container terminal that is expected to create over 400,000 jobs across the State.  A blend of old and new, the maritime industry in this region is meeting the future head-on.

Within the National Gateway Office team, the Mid-Atlantic Gateway Office will also serve as the subject matter expert for intermodal issues and containerized cargoes.  In addition to coordinating with the private sector, the Gateway Office also serves as the regional liaison to peers in Federal, State and local governmental agencies.
