| Summary: | We initiated an audit of FAA’s oversight of noncertificated aircraft repair facilities at the request of Representative James Oberstar, who expressed concern that U.S. airlines rely on repair facilities that are not certificated by FAA to maintain their aircraft. We will determine: (1) how FAA requirements for noncertificated facilities differ from requirements for certificated repair stations; (2) how FAA identifies and monitors work performed at noncertificated repair facilities and ensures that air carriers’ oversight of this work is effective; and (3) the reasons that air carriers use noncertificated repair facilities and the extent to which they use them to complete their aircraft maintenance work. |
