Gary T. Ritter, Domain Expert
Surface Transportation Infrastructure and Operations

Gary Ritter, a civil engineer and research scientist at the Center for 25 years, is a Domain Expert in Surface Transportation Infrastructure and Operations. He is recognized as an international authority on the application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology to transportation systems safety and operations. For over 15 years, Mr. Ritter has been a focal point for Volpe Center ITS activities. He mentors and provides technical leadership to multidisciplinary research and analysis teams. He is a Charter Member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America and has been a contributing author for all U.S. DOT Reports to Congress on ITS.

Mr. Ritter also is recognized as an authority on performance-based management of surface transportation infrastructure assets and operations. In this capacity, he has directed pioneering research and development efforts in the application of information systems technology to safety management, congestion management, pavement management, bridge management, and transit fleet and facility management. Mr. Ritter is a founding member of the Infrastructure Systems Committee within the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute.

Mr. Ritter also is a nationally recognized authority on planning and implementation of environmentally sustainable transportation system alternatives for national parks and public lands. He leads the Centers efforts in initiating, developing and shaping program and staff development efforts related to alternative transportation systems. Mr. Ritter serves on the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board's Task Force on Transportation Needs for National Parks and Public Lands, ADA40T.

Mr. Ritter plays leadership roles in national and international symposia, workshops and seminars that have brought together academia, industry experts, and stakeholders from different modalities and nationalities relative to the application of advanced technologies in transportation. He co-chaired the 7th International Conference on Applications of Advanced Technology in Transportation, and serves on the Advanced Technology Committee within the within the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute.
