Oil Pollution Act

The Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) has responsibility for implementing the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 as it applies to onshore oil pipelines. The goal of our efforts is to decrease the likelihood of pipeline spills, diminish the environmental consequences of spills, and ensure that the responses to spills are swift and well planned. Our program has several elements, all of which are intended to ensure that pipeline operators are able to protect the environment from major oil spills.

OPS participates in a variety of multiagency initiatives under the National Response Team, led by the EPA and Coast Guard. The following links contain documents and information pertaining to these multi-agency initiatives.
