Job Definition
Accounts payable clerks process invoices for the dealership and make payments by the due date, as well as review and resolve any invoicing issues.
As with all positions within dealerships, accounts payable clerks are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.
Job Duties
Job duties for accounts payable clerks include:
- Processing accounts payable invoices and payment requests, and issuing reimbursement checks.
- Reviewing invoices/payment requests for policy adherence.
- Matching checks to invoices/payment requests after each check run cycle.
- Maintaining the petty cash system.
- Entering invoices; entering, posting and reconciling batches; researching and resolving accounts payable or accounts receivable issues with customers or vendors.
- Processing timecards and posting payroll, if applicable.
Job Requirements
Accounts payable clerks should have strong mathematics, customer service and organizational skills. Prior accounts payable experience is preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, or the equivalent, is expected and familiarity with additional accounting software programs is valued.
Education Requirements
Accounts payable clerks should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Courses in mathematics, business, computers and accounting are useful.
Professional certifications may be beneficial to an accounts payable clerk, including a CGA (Chartered General Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certification.

The career path for an accounts payable clerk is flexible, and advancement opportunities may include office manager or comptroller.
