Expert User Guide
Welcome to the OSHA Expert. This Expert is designed to ask
a series of questions and, based on your responses, help determine if you are
required to comply with the Emergency Action Plan standard [29
CFR 1910.38].
This OSHA Expert only provides information based on Federal OSHA Emergency Response requirements. If you are covered by a state OSHA plan
you may need to contact your
local state OSHA office.

the appropriate answer to the question, "yes"
or "no", then "continue".
- To go back to previous questions click the "back"
button on the bottom of the screen. Do not use any other
back feature.
- To exit the Expert System select the "exit"
link in the top left corner of the screen.
- To start the Expert System over select the "start

- Creating the Report
-
In order for a plan to be
created, pop ups must be allowed from this site, or your
text will not be saved, and your report will not print.
Many different pop up blocker programs exist, and you may
be using more than one.
See the table below for instructions on how to allow pop
ups in the various programs with pop up blocker
features.
How to Allow Pop Ups In the Various
Programs with Popup Blocker Features |
Internet Explorer
To change your pop u[ blocker settings,
select "Tools" from the menu, then "Pop
Up Blocker", then "Pop Up Blocker Settings".
Add the OSHA web site to always allow pop ups or
turn off your pop up blocker feature.
|
Firefox
Select "Tools" from the menu, then
"Options". Select the "Content" icon at the top of
the window. Here you can turn off the pop up blocker
or add OSHA as an allowed site.
|
Google Toolbar
When a pop up is blocked, a notification
bar appears at the top of the window. Click it to allow the pop up one time or always allow
them at this site.
|
Other Pop Up Blocking Programs
Open the program and look for the documentation on the pop up
blocking feature. If necessary, go to the help file and
search for pop up blocking.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as AOL have
a built in pop
up blocking feature. Check
the with your ISP or its help files to bypass
the pop up blocker.
|
Pop Up Window
After you have allowed pop ups, check that a
small pop up window is open in the background, with the message:
"Do not close this window. It is being used by the OSHA
Emergency Action Plan Expert System to save your
text and to print your report." |
This is the text window that stores your data.
Remember, if this necessary pop up
is blocked, your text will not be saved, and your
report will not print. |
- Saving the Reports
- Use a word processing program to modify your plan.
First, open the word processor and save the new file
as your emergency action plan. Next, return to the browser
and select the text from the words "Emergency Action
Plan for:" to the end of the report, right before
the "PRINT" button. Do not select the header
or footer of the page. A simple method of doing this
is to click at the beginning of the text, hold down
the "SHIFT" button, and click at the end of
the text. To copy the text into the word processor,
press "CTRL" and "C" simultaneously.
Switch back to your word processor and paste the text.
To do this, press "CTRL" and "V"
simultaneously. This will paste the text into your Emergency
Action Plan. Save the file. You will now be able to
modify the text and format the page in the word processor.
- Printing the Reports
- After you have answered every question the Expert will generate a report informing you of the results.
Use one of the following methods to print this report:
- Click the print button at the bottom of the page,
- Click the print button in your browser,
- Right-click on the page and then select "print",
- Hold the "Ctrl" button down and type
"p",
- Choose "file" at the top of the menu
bar and select "print".
- Closing the Necessary Pop up Window
- The Expert System includes a necessary pop-up screen, which may be closed (only after the report
is printed) by clicking "Close this Window"
button at the bottom of the text; clicking "Close this
Window" in the top left corner of the screen; clicking
the "x" in the right corner of the window, or clicking
"file" then "close".
- Additional Information
- The Expert System can not be saved. If you must stop before you have finished, you must start over.
- The question numbers are noted at the bottom of each window (i.e. Q1-2) and
in the title bar of the browser window.
