FHWA TE Project: Lincoln, MI

Great Road Historic District

TE award: $1,077,600
Other funds: $270,000
Total cost: $1,347,600

The National Register-listed, and TE funded, Great Road Historic District preserves RI's oldest highway, Scenic Route 123. More than $1 million in TE funding has been used to protect the historic transportation corridor through the acquisition of scenic or historic sites, including the Eleazer Arnold House built in 1687.

TE funds also contributed to the construction of a pedestrian walkway and the preservation of Moffitt Mill, a water-powered textile mill dating to 1812. A 19th-century blacksmith shop and six other historic houses and farms are included in the Great Road Historic District.

The TE award complements previous preservation efforts in Lincoln and the greater Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor such as the rehabilitation and operation of Hanaway Blacksmith Shop, a historic site. The Great Road Historic District also serves as a popular destination for tourists within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor; thus, this TE project not only preserves the past but enhances future quality of life.
