Recovery
Once the dangers of the disaster have passed, the focus will shift
to rebuilding and recovering. This can take several months to many years
to complete, depending on the nature of the disaster. In addition, recovery
costs may be high, and may require financial assistance, which is available
from a variety of sources through the Federal Government.
- Lessons Learned from Surface Transportation Response/Recovery Workshop/Exercises
(Winter 2005) - From 2002-2004, FHWA sponsored regional multimodal
workshop/exercises to bring transportation agencies together with
other responders to work through realistic scenarios involving attacks
on the transportation infrastructure using weapons of mass destruction.
This link provides a collection of lessons learned in public safety,
transportation, and emergency management that emerged during the workshop/exercises.

- Rapid
Restoration of Transportation Facilities - Many techniques are
available to assist in rapid restoration of critical transportation
infrastructure. This FHWA website reviews them and provides more detail.
- Recovery
and Redundancy of Transportation Management Centers - The objective
of this project is to scan and synthesize current practices and state
of the practices as related to redundancy and recovery of TMCs. This
project also highlights technical issues to consider, lessons learned,
and recommended practices on the concepts, methods, and procedures
for planning, design, develop and implement recovery plans and redundancy
of TMCs.
- Decontamination
- Decontamination of affected transportation facilities may be the
first critical step in restoring transportation service. EPA is conducting
research in a variety of areas in Decontamination.
- Decontamination
Workshop Proceedings - The John A. Volpe National Transportation
Systems Center conducted a workshop on decontamination of transportation
facilities.
