Title:Two New York City DOT Bridge Officials Arrested on Federal Bribery Charges

Summary:On November 27, 2007, DOT/OIG agents safely executed an arrest warrant on Balram Chandiramani, Director of Movable Bridges for the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC/DOT), and Uday Shah, Assistant Civil Engineer for NYC/DOT, for allegedly participating in a bribery scheme. Mr. Chandiramani and Mr. Shah allegedly assisted a New York general contractor executive in negotiating a settlement on a claim the general contractor submitted to NYC/DOT for payment of outstanding change orders and project completion bonuses for the Third Avenue Bridge reconstruction project, which received DOT funding.

In return for providing confidential information about the claim, Mr. Chandiramani solicited a payoff from the general contractor executive in the amount of $400,000. Mr. Shah and Mr. Chandiramani agreed that Mr. Shah would receive $50,000 for negotiating the claim. Mr. Shah also solicited $50,000 from the general contractor executive for negotiating the claim. Mr. Shah solicited and received $10,500 in monitored cash payoffs from the general contractor executive in exchange for expediting NYC/DOT permits for the general contractor executive’s company in connection with a New York City Economic Development Corporation project that received DOT funding. Mr. Shah also received an additional $5,000 in monitored cash payoffs for the claim.

If convicted, Mr. Chandiramani and Mr. Shah could each face a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
