Eco-Logical

An Eco-Logical Approach to Transportation Planning in the Kansas City Region

State: Missouri

Applicant: Mid America Regional Council (MARC)

Grant Amount: $90,000

Period of Performance: 24 months

Summary:

This project will use the Eco-Logical framework to create more sustainable transportation infrastructure in the Kansas City metro area. The grant project will focus on three, interrelated goals: education, collaboration, and ecosystem-based green infrastructure planning. Ultimate project outcomes will include 1) multi-faceted educational programs structured to foster stronger interagency relationships and understanding of Eco-Logical approaches, 2) the development of a highly collaborative and integrative environmental-transportation planning and consultation process, and 3) a framework to support the creation of a regional, ecosystem-based green infrastructure conservation, restoration and mitigation plan.

The Mid-America Regional Council will work with a team of consultants to accomplish the following three goals: 1) creation of a regional green infrastructure mitigation strategy, 2) assistance in organizing and conducting workshops to build a better understanding of Eco-Logical principles and approaches, and 3) refinement and adoption of a Linking Environmental and Transportation Planning Action Plan. A draft of the action plan was created out of a two-day FHWA workshop in February, and has continued to be refined with a sub-group of workshop participants (Linking Environmental and Transportation Planning Action Plan Advisory Group). Two meetings have been held since the February workshop, with a third meeting scheduled for August.
