Title:Truck Driver Involved in Fatal Illinois Amtrak Grade Crossing Collision Convicted of Two State Felonies

Summary:A Kankakee County Court judge found John R. Stokes, of Manteno, IL, guilty of two state felony charges in connection with a March 1999 collision between a semi-trailer truck driven by Stoke and an Amtrak train near Bourbonnais, IL. Eleven Amtrak passengers were killed in the collision. Stokes was convicted of violating maximum specified driving times and willful falsification of the driver’s records of duty status. Sentencing is scheduled for September, 2004. The investigation is being conducted by OIG in cooperation with FMCSA, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, and the Illinois State Police.
