News Release ETA News Release: [07/07/2005] U.S. Labor Department Announces Winners of $15.6 Million for Youth Offender ProjectsWASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced winners of a competition for grants totaling $15.6 million to prepare youth offenders for successful entry into the workforce. Sixteen organizations from a pool of 168 applicants from across the country won a competition for awards ranging from about $851,000 to $1 million. “These grants will help young people turn their lives around and give them an opportunity to take a more positive path in the future,” said Secretary Chao. A competitive solicitation for grant applications was issued April 22 seeking projects consistent with both the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative and the Labor Department's Youth Vision. These grants will provide occupational training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship opportunities, internships and other work-based learning to help former offenders gain the skills for which high growth industries have strong demand. Winning projects will focus on addressing the workforce needs of growing industries that provide employment opportunities and potential for advancement. “Winners of these grants have been selected because they can help these young people prepare for employment with an array of services ranging from acquiring new or additional skills to helping them enter community and four-year colleges,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. “These grants will provide these youth, who do not have a long work history, good employment opportunities to help put their past behind them and begin to realize their potential.” For more information on the Department of Labor's employment and training programs, including the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative, please visit www.doleta.gov. # # # Youth Offender High Growth / High Demand Project Award Recipients
