Michael Trujillo was recently appointed to the position of Director, Departmental Office of Civil Rights for the Department of Transportation. He serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary on all matters involving employee and public civil rights and directs the activities of the headquarters civil rights staff to ensure timely and effective compliance with all employee and public related laws, regulations and policies. He also interfaces with human resources and department management to hire, develop and sustain a highly skilled and diverse employee workforce.

Prior to joining DOT, Mr. Trujillo served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Workforce Diversity at the US Department of the Interior. He was a key advisor and consultant to the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management and Budget on a full spectrum of issues, initiatives and policies related to human resources, diversity, equal employment opportunity, ethics, and educational partnerships.

Michael, as he prefers to be called, has a rich background in human resources, regulatory compliance, and public outreach and education. He has more than thirty years of experience in project management, program development, diversity, conflict resolution, training, assessments, audits and target-market outreach.

A fifth-generation native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where most of his family still resides, Michael has lived in Los Angeles, California, for most of his adult life. Prior to joining the Department of the Interior, he was Managing Partner of Golden State Management Services, a human resources and regulatory compliance consulting firm based in Pasadena, California. His thirteen years of consulting experience has included developing and implementing human resources, regulatory compliance and affirmative action programs for corporations, government agencies and public/private utilities.

Mr. Trujillo also has more than twenty years of management and human resources experience with The Broadway Department Stores, a division of Carter-Hawley- Hale, where he was the headquarters Divisional Vice President of Personnel.

He previously served as Board Chair of the Hollenbeck Police-Business Council (Hollenbeck Youth Center) in East Los Angeles, where he was active on the Board of Directors for more than twenty years. He also served as a member on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Women/Minority Business Enterprise Procurement Advisory Council and on the California Small Business Association's Emergency Disaster Loan Review Committee. As a governor's appointee to the California Board of Corrections, from 1992-1999, he interacted with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies on policy, regulations, training, and funding programs.

He is a former executive board member of the Latin Business Association (LBA) and represented the LBA and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) on the CalTrans Business Council and the California State Employment Committee. He was the founding president of the East L.A. Business and Economic Development Council.

Mr. Trujillo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Service Administration from California State University, Los Angeles and completed advanced training in management and human resources development. He is married to Mona Trujillo, who was also his business partner, and has three adult children - Michael, Anthony, and Adam - and one grandchild, Anthony.
