| Summary: | Our audit of FHWA’s inactive obligations identified about $42 billion as of March 31, 2001. Of those, about 25,000 obligations, totaling about $2.6 billion, had been inactive for 18 months. As a result of our audit, FHWA and state grantees are closing $238 million in obligations that no longer represent valid financial liabilities and either using them for other valid transportation projects or returning them to the U.S. Treasury General Fund. |
