Secretarial Business Development Mission to Turkey, January 19-21, 1998.

Growing power shortages, recent legislative changes and a new moderate government appear to have opened the way for a breakthrough in international, private power development in Turkey. After several years of preparatory work, about $8.3 billion in power development, privatization, and rehabilitation contracts are in advanced stages of negotiation; the government estimates that as much as $30 billion in private power facility investment will be needed by 2010. Realization of currently pending contracts should create a strong demand by builders and developers for the purchase of equipment and services in the next few years. Lingering problems with court reviews, arbitration clauses, and contract terms could slow implementation, but it is hoped that these can be resolved during the coming year with the impetus of this mission and urgent demand for power in the Turkish economy.
