NPMS Data Access Policy

There are three potential ways for a user to access NPMS data.

1. The Public Map Viewer is the only data access available to the general public and to contractors. It enables the user to view National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS) data one county at a time. NPMS data consists of gas transmission pipelines and hazardous liquid trunklines. It does not contain gathering or distribution pipelines, such as lines which deliver gas to a customer's home. Therefore, not all pipelines in an area will be visible in the Public Map Viewer. NPMS Data is for reference purposes only. It should never be used as a substitute for contacting a one-call center prior to excavation activities. Please call 811 before any digging occurs.

2. PIMMA (Pipeline Integrity Management Mapping Application is a username/password protected site for Federal, state, and local government officials and pipeline operators. PIMMA restricts the geographic area of view to the users area of jurisdiction, and contains additional data attributes and background layers that are not available on the Public Viewer. To apply for a PIMMA username and password, click here.

3. Submit a data request for raw NPMS geospatial data. This option is available to Federal, state, and local goverment officials and to pipeline operators. The data available is restricted by the applicant's jurisdiction. You should only apply for raw data if you are part of one of the above groups and if you have access to GIS software. Data sharing restrictions apply to Federal and state officials. Local officials can request county level data that does not include data sharing restrictions.
