The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has
announced the establishment of a medical review board, under the recently
passed highway bill, which will be charged with advising the Agency on health
issues related with commercial vehicle operators.
The Secretary of Transportation will appoint five physicians to the
board to begin work for fiscal year 2006. Applications must be received by Oct.
30, 2005.
The board will review all current FMCSA medical standards and
propose new standards and guidelines aimed at better ensuring physically
capable commercial vehicle operators are qualified. Additionally, the board
will develop an educational curriculum for training medical examiners who
certify commercial vehicle drivers.
