MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW for the 2008 Conference in Birmingham, Alabama on November 5-7, 2008!

This Conference is for owners, operators, suppliers, miners, contractors, educators, and regulatory professionals who want to support safe practices at our mines in the Southeastern US. We will address critical issues that affect ALL facilities that process coal, metal and non-metal mined products.

As part of its 2007-2008 Brookwood-Sago Grant, The Penn State Miner Training program (PSMT) will be conducting a train-the-trainer workshop on mine emergency preparedness. This program, titled, "Do you understand mine emergencies? Are you prepared for a mine emergency?" will better prepare responsible persons, trainers, safety directors, and supervisors to train and educate miners on the important provisions of the MINER ACT. The purpose of this training is to improve every miner's ability to escape or evacuate a mine in case of an emergency.

Since an accurate count of participants is needed to plan for lunch, refreshment breaks, and training material copies, all participants must register by contacting Kathy Johnstonbaugh at 814.865.7472 or kfb2@psu.edu. Registration deadline is November 24th.

The 13th Annual
Safety Seminar for
Underground Stone Mines
December 9 - 10, 2008
Louisville, KY
The only national meeting entirely focused on underground stone mining, this year the seminar will feature discussions related to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and methods to observe and control ground conditions. In addition, there will be special emphasis on hearing loss prevention. During certain times, hearing tests will be given in the NIOSH Hearing Loss Prevention Unit on a first-come, first-served basis.

An Early Bird Workshop on Tuesday, December 9th will focus on hearing loss prevention. Topics will include: training and interventions, exposure assessment for the stone industry, PPE applications, and noise controls for roof bolting machines and jackleg drills. Make plans now to attend the third annual Missouri Mine Safety and Health Conference January 15-16, 2009 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri.

The conference is a joint effort of Missouri's mining industry including the Missouri Limestone Producer's Association, SEMMSA, the State of Missouri and MSHA. It will feature exciting and informative speakers discussing a variety of topics pertaining to the mining industry.

This tuition-free seminar is for mining company managers, blasting engineers, blasters, and others involved with the planning, design, and use of explosives in the mining industry. The most recent innovations in drilling and blasting design technology will be addressed, along with specific blasting applications, up-to-date blasting regulations, and blasting related information from recognized experts. Presenters are drawn from manufacturers of explosives and accessories, blasting consultants, design experts, and government agencies.

Supervisors, mark your calendars now, and plan to attend the 13th Professional Development Mine Safety Seminar for Supervisors.

This affordable seminar and workshop will be held in Allentown, PA at the Holiday Inn Conference Center—Lehigh Valley. Organized by the Penn State Miner Training Program, MSHA, PA Mine Safety, and industry, the program is tailored for the safety and health professional development of supervisors who are interested in learning about practical approaches, tools, technology, and regulatory issues.

The proposed program covers a variety of topics, including, team work, disciplinary programs, successful industry safety programs, doing the right thing by safety, safety and profitability, dealing with drugs and alcohol, training skills, etc.

This announcement will be updated in November and will include final program and a registration link.
