Proximity Detection Single Source Page
 Proximity detection is a technology that can be installed on mobile machinery to detect the presence of personnel or machinery within a certain distance of the machine. Proximity detection systems can be programmed to send warning and machine shutdown commands when the programmed areas are encroached. MSHA has assisted the industry in the development of this technology on a variety of mobile machinery, both underground and surface. As of August 2008, the mining industry had experienced 30 fatal crushing or pinning accidents since 1984 that involved the operation of remote control continuous miners. Although remote control continuous miners have the highest incidence rate, similar accidents have been recorded on other types of mobile mining machines. Proximity detection can be deployed to eliminate these types of struck-by or vehicle collision accidents.
