Millennium Edition - dated December 18, 2000

MUTCD 2000 - Millennium Edition Book Cover

Before you get into the specific types of amendments to the MUTCD Millennium Edition, take note of some format changes designed to make the publication much more user-friendly. For example, each Part will be printed separately in 3-ring binders, much easier to update. Redesigned text format in columns will help users identify STANDARDS - "shall" conditions; GUIDANCE - "should" conditions; OPTIONS - "may" conditions; and SUPPORT - descriptive and/or general information for designing, placing, and applying traffic control devices. Measurements are presented in both metric and English units. Tables rather than text illustrate various aspects of sign size and color.

You will also find new Sections and Sections with new names. A new numbering format eliminates the hyphen between Sections and subsections; 6A-2 is now 6A.02, for example. Additionally, each Part now carries a number designation (2) rather than a Roman numeral (II).

Viewing the MUTCD

If you have difficulty viewing the MUTCD sections below (in PDF format), you may need to download and install new software. For best results we recommend Netscape, version 4 or higher, Internet Explorer, version 4 or higher, and Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 4.

Printing the MUTCD

The new manual is set up for double-sided, offset printing of over 1100 sheets of paper to be placed in a three-ring binder. The first 5 pages include a spine, title page, cover page, etc. If you are having trouble printing the MUTCD, you may need to adjust settings in "File > Page Setup" menu, in Adobe Acrobat. A high-grade ink-jet or laser printer is recommended for a quality hard copy. If you are still experiencing difficulties after making the suggested adjustments, please submit your problem on the Technical Feedback Page, and you will receive a reply.

The PowerPoint presentations which were previously on the MUTCD website described the proposed changes. Now that the MUTCD has been published, FHWA is updating the PowerPoint slides to discuss the items covered in the final rule. We plan to have the new PowerPoint slides posted on the website by the end of February.
