Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen had warm and productive meetings with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah in Riyadh on Tuesday. They discussed recent progress in the Middle East peace process and Iraq's unacceptable decision to stop weapons inspections by the U.N. Special Commission.
King Fahd stressed Saudi Arabia's strong friendship with the United States and pledged that the Kingdom will continue to support U.S. efforts to preserve regional security and stability.
Crown Prince Abdullah praised American leadership in helping the United Nations to contain Iraq. Cohen and Crown Prince Abdullah discussed possible responses to Iraq's latest challenge to the U.N. Security Council.
Based on his meetings, Cohen is confident that the United States will have the support it needs to take appropriate action to support the United Nations.
